The European Letter is back and it is dedicated to the European Elections.

In the aftermath of the political earthquake caused by the results of the European elections, it is increasingly clear that the construction of a democratic European sovereignty is the only way to stop the plan for democratic and civic backwardness carried out by nationalist and anti-European forces.

At the start of the new legislature, it is therefore imperative that the pro-European forces make their support for the new Commission conditional, not only on support for Ukraine in its resistance to Russian aggression, first and foremost on a commitment to support the European Parliament in its call for reform of the Treaties and to fight for the convening of the Convention.

The European Letter is published in 7 languages - from the edition 77 - under the auspices of the Luciano Bolis European Foundation in cooperation with the Union of European Federalists.

The European Letter is a periodical publication started in 1997 with the aim of stimulating political debate in national parliaments and governments, and in the European Parliament.

The European Letter 80 entitled "European Elections 2024: The fight between European Federalists and Nationalists has just begun", is sent to parliamentarians in the following legislative bodies:

Gender equality is a core principle of the European Union; a lot has been done to put it in practice but we are certainly not there yet. In business, politics and society as a whole, the Union must eliminate inequalities and to promote equality. This year’s theme for International Women’s Day, "Founding Mothers of Europe", commemorates all the visionary female leaders who inspired the creation of the European Union.

On this day, we want to show a new way of being European by illustrating and enhancing the role of the EU female pioneers, a diverse group of people who worked tirelessly and inspired the European project with shared ideals: a peaceful, fair, united and prosperous Europe.

Today, we commemorate figures such as Louise Weiss, the journalist who fought tenaciously for women's right to vote, the reconciliation and disarmament of Germany and France and whose ideas contributed to the construction of Europe. Simon Veil, the first president of the European Parliament (1979-1982) who developed the institution’s external relations by taking positions on major international issues, and even by engaging with third countries. Or Ursula Hirschmann, who organised the first meeting of the European Federalist Movement and "Femmes pour l'Europe'' believing that the European project needed a wider participation of women to achieve a true democracy in Europe.

Women and men are not equally represented across the European institutions and national governments. Women are most often in charge of ministries, delegations and permanent or parliamentary committees relating to social, educational, cultural, or rights-related matters, but are rare in the prestigious and regalian domains of economic affairs, foreign affairs and defense. Ursula von der Leyen, first female president of the European Commission is still an exception.

Significant strides in policies and programs cemented our dedication to improving the status of women and girls worldwide, and we must uphold our commitment to protect their rights. We need to keep addressing gender-based violence, gender stereotypes, gender gaps in the labour market, give equal participation across different sectors of the economy and achieving gender balance in decision-making using different tools like the EU Action Plan 2020-2025.

We appeal to all Member States to turn the current momentum into action, also using the opportunity of the resources of Next Generation EU to invest in reforms that make women's empowerment in our society truly possible. We can achieve sustainable development only by continuing to place gender equality and women's empowerment at the heart of our work and the EU economy. We want to encourage a new way of conceiving Europe by recounting these women’s lives and by looking for the soul and the sense of responsibility that Europe seems to have lost.

News from our sections on International Women's Day

Our newborn section of UEF Greece organised interviews with the main Greek women Politicians from different political families (Former Ministers and MEP Marietta Giannakou , Anna Diamantopoulou, Louka Katseli and Professor of Medicine Xara Spyliopoulou). It was a unique event. During the 4 hours long online event the main topics addressed were: “Mothers of Europe”, “Conference on the Future of Europe” and the role of federalists as well as other key issues for the post COVID-19 period.

The Union of European Federalists (UEF) has announced that it has established two new national sections in Greece and North Macedonia, extending the reach of the organisation in the South-East of Europe.

The new organisation in Greece, named Hellenic Union for the Federation of Europe, had its constituent meeting on 8 November 2019 in the Office of the European Parliament in Athens. Over a hundred people from the political, business and academic community were present at the event, that was attended also by Marietta Giannakou (member of the Greek Parliament), Manolis Kefalogiannis (member of the European Parliament), Miltos Kyrkos (former member of the European Parliament) and Dimitrios Tsiodras (Director of the Press Department of the Prime Minister) alongside academics, business executives and students. The Board of the new organisation includes Prof. Ioannis Papageorgiou of the University of Tessaloniki (Chair), Daphne Gogou, European Commission official (Vice Chair), Euclides Sakellarios (Secretary General), Dr Venetia Koussia, Director General of The Council on Competitiveness for Greece (Treasurer), Stathis-Raphael Pasgianos and Stefanos Panakoulias (Board members).

The new organisation in North Macedonia was established on 24 April 2019 and had already a series of events to support the accession process of Republic of North Macedonia into the European Union and promote further European integration. Petar Bogojeski has been elected President and Sasho Lazarovski has been elected Secretary General. The new organisation is organizing a large public event with national political personalities on 14-15 December in Skopje.

Both organisations have been formally accepted as candidate sections by the Federal Committee of the UEF meeting in Rome on 23-24 November.

The Union of European Federalists is a pan-european, non-governmental, non partisan political organisation, dedicated to the promotion of European political unity. Founded in 1946, for more than 70 years UEF has been the leading voice in the promotion of European unity and an early campaigner for all key milestones in the development of the European Communities and then the European Union. Today UEF is engaged in promoting a united, strong, democratic and federal Union. UEF has more than 30,000 members in 25 national branches and 400 local groups, coordinated by the European secretariat based in Brussels.

It also has a youth organisation with 13,000 members (Young European Federalists).
