Respecting the Rule of law has become a problem in the EU as results from the tense dialogue between the Union and some Member States who have challenged European values and the primacy of EU law for the past few years. A dismantling of democratic institutions is at work in order to control justice and put a gag on dissenting voices. Worse still, some of these countries threaten to block key decisions such as the revision of the multiannual financial framework and aid to Ukraine.

Is the situation tenable for the Union in consideration of its political interests and geopolitical tensions? What are the tools at hand to circumvent filibustering while European elections are near, enlargement is looming and national-populist one-upmanship is on the rise. Luis Romero Requena looks into the current situation, in light of his long experience of European affairs, and forward at the next milestones.

Le respect de l’État de droit est devenu un problème au sein de l’Union comme il ressort du dialogue difficile depuis des années entre l’Union et certains États membres qui ont remis en cause les valeurs européennes et la primauté du droit européen. Plus grave encore, ces États menacent de bloquer des décisions fondamentales comme la révision du cadre financier pluriannuel et l’aide à l’Ukraine.
Cette situation est-elle tenable pour l’Union au regard de ses intérêts et des tensions géopolitiques? De quels outils dispose-t-elle pour déjouer efficacement l’obstructionnisme de certains États alors que les élections européennes sont là, que l’élargissement se profile très vite, sur fond de surenchères national-populistes.
