NATIONALISM, FEDERALISM AND EUROPEAN INTEGRATION
edited by Guido Montani
On Wednesday 21 June, the Union of European Federalists is glad to present the book “Nationalism, federalism and European Integration” edited by Guido Montani. The book is a collection of 22 essays written by Mario Albertini (1919-1997), political philosopher, leading thinker on federalism, and one of the leaders of the European Federalist Movement for many decades.
As a political philosopher, Mario Albertini laid out the cultural and theoretical foundations of European federalism, deconstructing the myths of the national state and exclusive national sovereignty, criticizing the traditional inter-governmental method of European integration, and developing federalism as a comprehensive political thought matching the challenges of European unity. As an activist, he took the leadership of the federalist movement from Altiero Spinelli in the 1950s and led it through its main campaigns until his death in 1997, with a key role in the campaign for a European Parliament elected by universal suffrage and later on the single European currency.
This publication comes twenty years from Mario Albertini’s death. His key essays have been translated into English to fill the gap in the international debate where the knowledge of his political ideas and their importance for the theoretical foundation of federalism is still very limited today among scholars of political and social sciences.
