STATEMENT ON ELECTORAL LAW

UEF notes with concern the Council current inaction towards this electoral law proposed by the European Parliament and strongly supports the possibility to open direct negotiations between the Council and the EP. It is time for the Council to stop blocking institutional files (art. 48, electoral law, right of inquiry) that can develop European democracy.

Adopted by the Federal Committee of UEF, Online 11 December 2022.

UEF welcome and supports the new proposal adopted In May by the European Parliament seeking to turn the 27 separate elections into a single European election and remember the common rules proposed by the European Parliament in November 2015.

UEF strongly agrees on the necessity to empower voters and to strength the European democracy in the next European elections through transnational electoral lists, respecting the principles of geographical balance and gender equality and improving the rights of persons with disabilities (equal access to ballots and postal voting).

Pan-European lists should be headed by the candidates seeking the Commission presidency nomination supported by a coalition of European political parties.

UEF strongly emphasizes the fact that these proposals have been supported in the conclusions of the Conference on the future of Europe expecting that the Council and the Commission will respect the clear will of the European citizens.
