Declaration regarding the elections to the European Parliament
The European Congress of the UEF, meeting in Genoa on 19-21 March 2004,
Realises that Members of the European Parliament, to be elected in June 2004, will face some crucial decisions for the future of European unity, including :
· The choice of the next President of the European Commission;
· The ratification of the European Constitution, if it can be agreed with the minimum
further amendment from the draft proposed by the Convention;
· The need to convene a new European Convention, no later than 2008, to rectify the faults in the constitution;
Therefore calls upon all political parties contesting the elections for the European Parliament in June to nominate, beforehand, their preferred candidate to become the next president of the
European Commission;
Calls upon all candidates in the elections for the European Parliament in June :
· to inform their voters who they would like to see as the next President of the European Commission;
· to commit themselves to the ratification of the European Constitution;
· to commit themselves to calling for a new Convention to be held no later than 2008 to rectify the faults in the Constitution;
Calls upon all voters in the European Parliament elections to support candidates who commit themselves to these objectives.
