COP30 in Brasil, world democracy stakes and the role of the EU
The Conference of the Paries meet in Belém (Brasil) from November 6th to 21st. It happens 10 years after the Paris Agreement - that opened a global path to limit and adapt to climate change - and while the year 2024 has been confirmed as the warmest year never registered, above 1,5 degree over the pre-industrial era.
This COP takes place in a moment where actions to mitigate climate change are being put aside in many countries and continent, beginning with the European Union after the 2024 parliamentary elections, and followed by the United States governed by a bench on climatosceptics (shall we recall, against the broad international scientific consensus). China however, stick to its plan to get rid of coal and develop renewable energy.
At its 2025 Congress, the World federalist movement - to which UEF belongs - recalled in a communication its long-standing for :
- A supranational decision-making system on climate
- A World environnemental court in whicu supranational law is superior to states laws
- A further work on global tax or revenue
The WFM works on the programme called Mobilizing an Earth Governance Alliance (MEGA) and take part in strengthening civil society on that matters. (LINK HERE)
In October, Lula - Brazil's president who will preside the COP30 - published an opinion piece in several European newspaper calling for climate justice. Indeed, the matter of global social justice is a piece of the puzzle our organisation did not work on yet.
This is the reason why the Political Commission on Ecological transition convene this debate open to UEF FC members and Observers with :
- Adrien Fabre, economist, researcher at CNRS (Paris), president of Global Redistribution Advocate (also a member of WFM) and author of A Global Plan against Extreme Poverty and for Climate
- Chloé Mikolajczak, activist for environmental and social justice, specialised in EU policies

The debate will take place online on Tuesday November 18st, from 8.30 to 10pm.
With this debate we aim at opening the discussion and gather the opinion of UEF members to prepare a press release related to COP30 and next a resolution on Ecological transition and federalism for the next UEF Congress.
