“Europe at the Crossroads of History’s Great Decisions”

Athens, 9 May 2026

At a time of global uncertainty and profound geopolitical realignments, Europe Day 2026 highlights the urgent need for a deep political and institutional transformation of the European Union. The 9th of May is not merely a historical anniversary, but a reminder that Europe was built as the most ambitious peace project in modern history.

Today, Europe is called upon to return stronger and more competitive, addressing rising living costs, energy insecurity, and the housing crisis, while reinforcing its social model and reducing inequalities — essential conditions for preserving social cohesion and democratic stability.

The President of UEF Greece, Daphne Gogou, stated that “this year’s anniversary marks a period of major decisions for Europe, which must respond to citizens’ demands for peace, security, and sustainable development,” underlining that “Greece must remain at the core of European developments.”

Vice President Giorgos Korkovelos, for his part, stressed that “the federal path is necessary for safeguarding social cohesion and strengthening economic competitiveness,” noting that “our country must actively help shape Europe’s future as an equal and strategic partner.”

UEF Greece underlines that Europe can no longer operate through slow and hesitant procedures when confronted with challenges that require political unity, democratic deepening, and common strategic action.

Europe is now called upon to prove that it can evolve into a strong political community that defends human dignity, democracy, and the rule of law, while keeping alive the promise of peaceful coexistence among peoples through a shared European future.
