Pivotal discussions on the Future of European Integration Ahead of the 2024 European Elections

Athens, Greece – In a significant prelude to the European elections of June 9, 2024, the UEF Greece-ΕΕνΟΕ in collaboration with the Institute of International Economic Relations (IIER) hosted two key roundtable discussions aimed at deepening the dialogue on critical European challenges, as geopolitical shifts and urgent institutional reforms shape the landscape of European integration.

The first event took place on April 1, 2024, at the IIER venue and brought together esteemed speakers such as Spyros Danellis, former MEP and member of the Spinelli Group, SYRIZA, Petros Kokkalis, MEP for the Greens, founder of COSMOS party, Marilena Koppa, Professor at Panteion University, former MEP, Napoleon Maravegias, Professor Emeritus at National Kapodistrian University of Athens, former Minister of Rural Development, Kostas Chrysogonos, MEP candidate, PASOK-Movement for Change. The discussion covered institutional changes, foreign policy and defense, fiscal-euro-social policy, climate change, and migration/refugee challenges.

The second roundtable, on April 8, 2024, same location, featured Panagiotis Ioakeimidis, Emeritus Professor of European Politics at the University of Athens, and Dimitris Tsiordas, journalist and Director of the Prime Minister's Press Office. Along with Nikos Farantouris, Professor of European Law, University of Piraeus, advisor to SYRIZA's president, Andreas Spyropoulos, Secretary of the Central Political Committee of PASOK-Movement for Change, Gabriel Sakellaridis, economist, responsible for political planning, candidate for New Left, they deliberated on the same thematic units, focusing on the pressing need for strategic and institutional reforms within the European Union.

These discussions were particularly timely, occurring in a period marked by geopolitical realignments in Europe and its neighboring regions. Charalambos Tsardanidis, Director of IDOS, Emeritus Professor at the University of Peloponnese and Daphne Gogou, lawyer, President of UEF Greece - EEnOE, member of the Executive Office of the European Federalists (UEF) acted as event moderators respectively.

Both events aimed to foster a constructive exchange of ideas and proposals that address the concerns of European citizens and provided insightful policy responses in anticipation of the upcoming European Elections in June 2024.

Stay tuned for our future challenging events.
