Barcelona / Bucharest, March 2026 — The Romanian delegation of the "Initiative for a United Europe" (IEU - UEF Romania) actively and successfully participated in the XXIX European Congress of the Union of European Federalists (UEF), held in Barcelona from March 20 to 22, 2026. The Congress held profound historical significance, marking the 80th anniversary of the UEF's foundation in 1946.

A Historic Representation for Romania

The Congress gathered prominent European political figures, including Josep Borrell, Guy Verhofstadt, Salvador Illa, and Enrique Barón Crespo. On this high-level political stage, the Romanian delegation achieved an exceptional outcome: all candidates supported by the UEF Romania team were elected to the European statutory bodies of the UEF.

This remarkable performance reaffirms the trust of European partners in the Romanian section:

  • Alin Mituța was elected Vice-President of the UEF.
  • Simina Tulbure was elected Member of the Executive Bureau.
  • Mihai Beța and Lucian Alexandru Onisei were elected Members of the Federal Committee.
  • Eusebiu-Valentin Stamate was appointed Member of the Arbitration Board.

Eastern Flank Security and Enlargement: Priorities on the Agenda

For UEF Romania, the stakes of this Congress were highly strategic, focusing on two major directions. First, the delegation aimed to consolidate the role of Romania and Central and Eastern European states within the European federalist movement.

Second, the Romanian representatives actively worked to shape the UEF's political agenda, emphasizing critical issues for the region: ensuring security on the Eastern Flank, supporting the European Union's enlargement to the East and the Western Balkans, and pushing for necessary and profound institutional reforms.

A Europe That Protects

Simina Tulbure, President of UEF Romania and newly elected member of the European Executive Bureau, summarized the vision that guided the Romanian team throughout the Congress:

"We grew up in a Europe of opportunities. We are now building a Europe that protects and leads."

The UEF Romania delegation extends its sincere gratitude to the Spanish hosts (UEF Spain and UEF Catalunya) for the excellent organization and warm hospitality in Barcelona. Furthermore, the Romanian section warmly congratulates the UEF President, Domènec Ruiz Devesa, re-elected by acclamation, and the entire European team on their new mandate.

UEF Romania remains deeply committed to continuing its work for a strong Romania at the heart of a united, federal Europe.
